Uptake of Host Metabolic Succinate Correlates with Salmonella Virulence Induction

Abstract

Accumulation of succinate promotes Salmonella pathogenic program during intracellular infection. Using RNA-seq, increased mRNA expression of the genes in pmrAB and Salmonella pathogenicity island2 (SPI-2) regulon is measured in succinate-containing medium. Furthermore, uptake of host metabolic succinate through DcuB transporter also induces program for Salmonella virulence. Thus, succinate is major factor of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S.Tm) virulence induction.
